The Africa Day celebrations in Sydney will take place on Saturday 31 May 2014 at the Blacktown City Centre from 10am and will include a Nelson Mandela tribute. If you attend, please be sure to drop by and say hello.
Below is the press release for the event:
This historic event is hosted to bring together our diverse and rich cultures celebrating our IDENTITY HISTORY UNITY
Africa Day is celebrated worldwide as the day we honour those that struggled tirelessly to create the great African Union we know today.
As African Australians, we have the unique opportunity to showcase ourselves and our communities at this annual event.
2014 will see the first All Nations Parade taking place at Blacktown as part of the Blacktown Festival Parade at later at Blacktown Showground for African Union Flag raising and Lighting the Flame of Hope for Africa.
We will honour those that paved the way for many of the African migrants that call Australia home today; in addition we will honour those African men who were transported to Australia on the first fleet in 1788 and whose descendants are in excess of 20,000.
54 African nations will represent their own culture with One nation One flag, and also Friends of Africa, those that have also worked tirelessly to improve life and conditions in Africa and those that continue to work outside Africa to raise awareness.
This monumental ALL NATIONS PARADE will also attract media and publicity and it is the communities greatest opportunity to show main stream Australians how diverse and rich our continent really is.
It is our intent to invite distinguished guests to this special event and honoured members of the community.
Perhaps the greatest honour we will have on the day is our Tribute to Nelson Mandela, as all Africans and people of the World honour the life and works of this great leader of Africa and the world.
We hope to attract media so that we can share with others our day of days.
An invitation to all community groups to participate in this historic march of unity. We hope that all African organization will ensure their communities take part and showcase their national identity by wearing their traditional clothes and provide their traditional music and energy. It is an important step forward for the African people in this country. Blacktown and many suburbs close by, is home to a very large African community. This opportunity has never been offered to the African Community. We need all of our African family to take part. A meeting will be called to provide details on participation in the near future. A list of contact names is provided for your further information and for more details.
We look forward to your participation and please contact us for any further information.
Sincerely
